plan o the day |
We began with the Copper Coffee Pot song and then with introductions. Everyone was asked to share a little known fact about themselves to break the ice. We have a LOT of musicians playing Village this summer. It looks like we might just pull a performance together for the mini fair. We also learned how to say, "Don't do stuff which you are not supposed to do in the bathroom" in Korean. Well, perhaps we didn't learn, but we were told. Next we sang the Done song and Jacques led everyone around on a tour of Village Field Farm. There are many nice places to work, play, and settle a community!

The rest of the morning was spent learning about scale and creating peeps. Fortunately/unfortunately it was very rainy this morning and afternoon so we cancelled our swimming and kept on making peeps. Everyone in town has a completed (or very nearly) peep.

When we could stand the indoors no longer we ventured out into the rain to get an idea of how big a real acre is. As it turns out an acre is quite large, 43,560 square feet to be exact. I think, if strung properly, there will be room for everyone to settle and a fair ground to be built. Of course this is not what happened... again I am adumbrating.
As we stood in the rain contemplating just how vast our expanse could be we were visited by a Magistrate and a lawyer. The Magistrate read the Proprietary Rights Agreement to all and the lawyer turned the pages in his book and nodded, occasionally adding a comment to further confuse things. All of the homesteaders signed the agreement and then set off on their first team building activity.
This activity shall be called "Here is a bucket of string, kids..."
The idea was that we really didn't need to spend all day out in the rain scouting for land, did we? 21 homesteaders were given eight 100ft sections of string and 30 minutes to find their land and string it up. At the end of 30 minutes we had many wet and itchy people, several tangled gobs of string and a mess in the woods. It was time for our very first meeting- "What Now?"
Concerns were raised during the meeting that the town was claiming less than their fair share because not all of the string was used. Will there be enough land for everyone in this small space? Will there be room for the mini fair? Town center? It has been decided that this community of homesteaders needs a bit more time to get their strings untangled and their acre settled. Strategies for better teamwork were discussed. We shall see what happens tomorrow.
After corvee we had just enough time for the Village tradition of plusses and wishes.
Today we liked:
- getting the acre done (this was rescinded)
- finishing peeps!!!!
- getting a little ahead of everyone (cardboard model started)
- finishing time & space capsules
- finishing peep bios
- being here!!
- wearing a fantastic outfit
- 1st day of Village!!!
